Poole Town are through to the next round of the Isuzu FA Trophy after fighting back from 1-0 down to come back and win 2-1 beating Yate Town at the Lodge Road.
The Dolphins made a fast start and there were promising signs early on. It was all Poole Town for the first 15, especially down the left-hand side where Ik Hill, who made his return to the starting eleven, was getting lots of joy linking up with Selim Saied. Saied was involved again when he had his shot crash off the crossbar after some intricate football with Kris Campbell.
Yate Town then responded by having a shot of their own tipped onto the post after a wonderful save from Adam Parkes. The game then began to open up with Yate once again testing Parkes as he saw Jenkins shot come back off the post before eventually clearing. As the game wore on Poole struggled to regain control of the game and despite some impressive play up top, both teams headed into the break goalless.
The second half started with a quiet spell for both sides as they knew how important the first goal could be. But in the 60th minute Poole began to show some positive signs and had a flurry of crosses into the box which Yate struggled to deal with. Still searching for the opener and sensing Yate’s weakness, managers Pat and Joe decided to bring on Antonio Diaz and Charlie Davis for Josh McCormick and Kris Campbell. The dolphins continued to knock on the door, and with just under 20 minutes to go they seemed the most likely to open the scoring.
However, it was Yate Town who found themselves 1-0 up after breaking the deadlock in the 74th minute when James Taylor bundled in the ball from a corner. But just two minutes later Poole Town responded immediately when Harvey Slade picked up the ball just outside the box and rifled a shot into the top left corner, leaving the keeper with no chance. The momentum had shifted within minutes, and Poole then piled on more pressure.
In the 78th minute Ayo came on to mark his Poole Town debut, as Poole continued to search for the winner with the clock ticking down. The 50 travelling fans pushed the team on in their search for the winner and it didn’t take long. The pressure finally paid off in the 86th minute when Antonio Diaz finished off a lovely move and sent the Poole fans into raptures.
Josh Staunton then came on for Selim Saied in the 90th minute as Poole looked to close out the game. Despite the 5 additional minutes the team stayed solid and held on, claiming the win. The victory means Poole progress to the 1st round of the Isuzu FA Trophy, which will be played on the 25th of October. With the team back to scoring ways, the Dolphins’ will look to continue their strong start in the league when they take on Tiverton away on Tuesday.
