Poole Town fell to defeat on derby day as Wimborne won it late in the StourCo Derby.

With Poole Town sitting in the relegation zone and Wimborne only narrowly ahead, the importance of this fixture was much more than just bragging rights, three points being of vital significance to both sides.

This match was originally set to take place on New Years Day but was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.

Poole management duo Joe Lea and Pat Suraci made a double change following the 1-0 defeat on Saturday with Harvey Slade and Tyrique Clarke bolstering the midfield.

It was the hosts who got the match underway at The Wyatt Homes Stadium infront of a crowd of over 2,000 people.

Chances were limited for either side early on in the game, whilst Wimborne were dominating the majority of possession.

The first major chance of the match fell to the Magpies on the 31st minute as Bedford’s effort was brilliantly blocked by Harry Thomas at point-blank range.

The deciding factor of the game arrived with five minutes to go until the break as Poole’s Charlie Davis jumped into a two-footed challenge and was shown a straight red card.

With the Dolphins down to ten players, it seemed it would be quite some uphill battle for Lea and Suraci’s men.

Moments after the red card, Burrows’ free kick almost made its way into the back of the net but was denied by a great stop by Ben Taylor.

The half came to a goalless close with defences on top at the break.

A half time substitution for Poole with Rafa Ramos replacing midfielder Tyrique Clarke.

Poole came out for the second half with a higher intensity despite the hosts having the more of the ball.

In search of the opening goal, Wimborne pushed on and created multiple openings but the Poole defence maintained valiantly throughout the second half.

Despite Poole’s defensive efforts, Wimborne eventually opened the scoring in the 88th minute after a header was deflected in off Jamie Whisken to give the hosts the lead.

With six additional minutes on the clock, it seemed the match winner had already been decided, and Wimborne would be victorious on derby day.

A hard-fought match at The Wyatt Homes Stadium and although Poole defended valiantly throughout, Wimborne clinched the three points at the death.

The Magpies have now jumped to 15th place, leaving Poole stuck in the relegation zone on 29 points after 30 matches played.
