Poole Town Women claimed a well-deserved three points at home with a 3–1 win against Bishops Lydeard — a team they had already beaten away on the opening day of the season.
Poole’s first home fixture of the campaign, began evenly as both sides looked to find their rhythm. Early exchanges saw chances at both ends, but neither side could make the breakthrough.
As Poole began to settle, their trademark passing combinations started to shine. Lucy Coalter once again proved a constant threat down the wings, driving at defenders and creating problems for the Bishops back line. Despite Poole’s attacking intent, the visiting goalkeeper and some strong defending kept the score level.
Bishops Lydeard also had moments of promise, testing Poole’s defence but finding no way past. The hosts thought they had earned a penalty when Coalter was brought down in the box after rounding the keeper, but much to the disbelief of the home crowd, the referee waved play on.
Half-time: 0–0.
The second half began in similar fashion, with both teams battling for control. Then came a moment of controversy — a Bishops player went down under minimal contact in the Poole area, and the referee pointed to the spot. Bishops converted to make it 1–0.
That decision seemed to spark Poole into life. With a few tactical changes, the home side began to dominate possession and push higher up the pitch. The pressure finally told when Beth Anderson found space in the box and calmly slotted home the equaliser.
Poole were now flying, and Bishops Lydeard were being forced deeper and deeper. Another dangerous ball into the box caused confusion between the goalkeeper and defenders, allowing Coalter to capitalise and give Poole a 2–1 lead.
With confidence soaring, Poole’s football began to flow freely. Late on, Summer Williams added a well-taken third to seal a convincing victory for the home side.
The result means Poole continue their strong start to the season, with plenty of positives to build on ahead of their next fixture.
